Adobe Photoshop Assignment
How this image was created:
- images had been previously imported into photoshop using a flatbed scanner
- images scanned from the books listed on the image
- color images were scanned at 300 pixels per inch (ppi); black and white at 150 ppi
- each image was color/brightness/contrast adjusted and saved as a separate JPEG file
- created a new photoshop file: RGB color, 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, 300 ppi
- created background layer
- selected the linear gradient tool and created a custom gradient that went from a dark blue to a lighter blue back to the dark blue
- drew the gradient across the background layer from upper left to lower right
- modified the gradient with the pixelate-->pointillize filter, using the smallest cell size available, with the background color set to black before the filter was applied
- added text using the text tool (each set of text added in a separate layer)
- added title text in Cooper Black font
- added 'not to scale' note in smaller Cooper Black font, with italics, in white
- added note about image sources in Arial font
- added black boxes on separate layers behind the title and 'image source' texts
- changed the color of text to white
- linked each text layer to the appropriate black box layer
- arranged the text boxes to their final positions, using guides to align the boxes
- added scanned images as separate layers
- moved each image into the photoshop document by dragging and dropping with the move tool
- used the magic wand tool to select the unwanted white space around each image and delete it so that the background showed through
- used the pencil tool to touch up some black lines in the leech and clam images
- touched up the backswimmer
- used the rubber stamp (cloning) tool to fill some accidently deleted portions of the head
- masked the outline of the backswimmer and colorized the wings and legs, using the brush tool set to multiply
- colorized the snail shell
- used the magic wand tool to select the white area inside the snail shell
- added an off-center foreground to background radial gradient with brown and white as the selected colors
- added some rough brush strokes with the brown foreground color for shadowing
- applied the distort-->ocean ripple filter to blend and add texture
- used the free transform function to rotate, flip and scale images as needed
- arranged the images into their final positions using the move tool
- saved the original file with layers in PSD format
- used the flatten layers function to flatten the image
- saved the flat file in JPEG format (save as)
- optimized the image for web viewing by changing the resolution to 72 ppi and reducing the size to 600 by 480 for the larger version and 250 by 200 for the smaller version
