Scanned Slides

These images were captured at the Virginia Tech Horticultural Gardens during lab on September 26, 2003. The camera settings, film and scanning parameters are recorded below each image.

Macro bracket-flash 35 mm slides

  • 100 mm Macro lens with Bracket Flash set-up
  • ISO 200 Kodak Elite slide film
  • f-stop of 22; exposure time of 1/60 second
  • scanned with Dr. Mullins' Kodak Slide Scanner
    • image size = 3" x 4.5" (331.621%)
    • resolution = 300 dpi

    • exposure settings = lightness +19, contrast +35
    • saved as as a JPEG file, size = 105 kb

  • Image from page 69 of Alien Empire: An Exploration of the Lives of Insects by Christopher O'Toole
  • scanned with an ASTRA UMAX 1220U scanner into Adobe Photoshop
    • scanner is ~5 years old
    • scanning method: single pass with color CCD
    • optical resolution: 600 x 1200 dpi
    • data output: 36 bit (color), 12 bit (grayscale)
  • Step 1: make sure the scanner bed is clean!
  • Scanned color plate only, at 300 dpi
  • In photoshop, I
    • adjusted the brightness/contrast to make the page bright white
    • used the select tool and inverse selection tool to remove the extra text and background
    • used the eraser tool to remove specks.
    • centered the caption
    • cropped the image and saved as a JPEG
    • made a thumbnail version of the image
