Description:
An orientation
to, and preparation for a profession in the life sciences. Topic emphasis
includes: History of applied life sciences, the scientific method, literature
sources, information retrieval, presentation of research results, instructional
techniques and technology, and information systems.

Upon
completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Search the
scientific literature effectively using modern information retrieval systems
for life sciences as needed to prepare theses and dissertations, journal
articles, and grant proposals.
- Explain
the basis for and procedures required by Good Laboratory Practices protocols.
- Prepare
the results of research by means of appropritate graphs, figures, illustrations,
photographs, etc., for reporting.
- Write articles
which are acceptable for publication in scientific journals.
- Discuss
elements and techniques regrading good instructional technigues.
- Explain
the responsibilities of professional biologists.
- Be
able to construct and maintain a site on the world-wide
web, including the ability to construct hypermedia documents
and have a working knowledge how the Web and Internet
can be used in biological and environmental science applications.
- Discuss
the history of the land-grant system and development of agricultural (applied)
biology.
- Explain
the functions of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Capture
and process video, 35 mm and digital imagery using micro and macrophotographic
systems.
- Discuss
the procedures involved in grant writing.
- Discuss
intellectual properties.
